Training Visa (Subclass 407)
The Training Visa (Subclass 407) allows eligible people to undertake workplace-based occupational training or an approved professional development program in Australia. It is designed for genuine training rather than ongoing employment and can be granted for up to two years.
Visa Route Migration can assist both the trainee and sponsoring organisation with relevant sponsorship, nomination, training-plan, documentation and visa-application requirements once a suitable sponsoring organisation and proposed training arrangement are in place.
Support Across the 407 Process
Why Choose Us for Training Visa (Subclass 407)
A Subclass 407 matter can involve separate responsibilities for the sponsoring organisation and the visa applicant. Visa Route Migration can assist both sides where appropriate, helping them understand how the sponsorship, nomination and visa-application stages relate to one another and what information may be required at each stage.
The training itself is also an important part of the application. Assistance may include preparing the training plan and supporting documentation, identifying the relevant occupational-training type and helping ensure the proposed arrangement is presented consistently with the applicant’s circumstances and the purpose of the training.
Professional assistance is provided by Registered Migration Agent Rose Khangura, MARN 2619247. The wider approach of Visa Route Migration emphasises personalised attention, practical guidance, understandable explanations and careful consideration of individual circumstances rather than treating every visa matter as an identical application.
The service boundaries are also kept clear. Visa Route Migration provides migration advice and application assistance once a client has a suitable sponsoring organisation and proposed training arrangement. It does not provide an employment-placement, training-placement or sponsor-finding service.
Subclass 407 Support
Different Training Visa matters can involve different training purposes and application stages. I already had an organisation willing to provide workplace training but was unsure how the Subclass 407 requirements applied to the proposed arrangement. I wanted professional assistance before progressing because the sponsorship, nomination and visa stages seemed closely connected. The guidance helped me understand what information related to me as the trainee, what my sponsoring organisation needed to address, and what needed to be prepared before the visa application stage.

Subclass 407 Requirements
Our organisation wanted to provide a genuine training opportunity but needed help understanding the migration requirements involved in sponsoring a Subclass 407 trainee. We sought assistance with the Temporary Activities Sponsor and nomination aspects rather than treating the matter as a standard employment visa. The guidance helped us focus on the proposed training, the trainee’s circumstances, and the documentation relevant to our role as the sponsoring organisation.

Temporary Activities Sponsor
I was looking at the Training Visa because I needed workplace-based training to improve my occupational skills. I wanted to understand whether my experience and proposed training arrangement fitted the relevant Subclass 407 training type. Having the requirements explained in relation to my occupation and training needs helped me identify the information my sponsor and I needed to prepare before taking the application further.

Occupational Skills Training
I required practical training connected with professional registration and wanted to understand whether the Subclass 407 pathway could apply. The process involved more than simply having an organisation willing to train me. I needed to consider the purpose and duration of the training, my previous experience, and the registration requirements involved. The professional guidance helped me understand which parts needed supporting evidence and how the visa and nomination stages fitted together.

Professional Registration Training
My proposed training fell within the capacity-building area of the Subclass 407 visa, and I wanted assistance understanding the requirements that applied to that type of training. Rather than relying on general information about Training Visas, I was able to focus on the reason for the program, the proposed training arrangement, and the evidence relevant to my circumstances before deciding how to proceed.

Capacity-Building Training
Preparing the training plan was one of the areas our organisation needed help with. We understood what skills the trainee needed to develop, but we wanted the proposed program to clearly describe the training objectives and how the workplace activities related to those needs. The assistance helped us work through the information required for the training arrangement and understand how it connected with the Subclass 407 nomination.

Training Plan Preparation
I had already found a suitable sponsoring organisation and training arrangement, so I did not need an employment or sponsor-placement service. What I needed was migration assistance with the Subclass 407 process itself. The distinction was clear from the beginning, and the guidance focused on the visa, sponsorship, nomination, documents, and training requirements that applied to the arrangement we already had in place.

Subclass 407 Process
Our Subclass 407 matter involved both the sponsoring organisation and the visa applicant, and we wanted the information provided by each side to be approached consistently. The assistance covered the relevant sponsorship and nomination requirements, the proposed training documentation, and the applicant’s visa stage. It was useful to have professional guidance that considered how the different parts of the same Training Visa matter related to one another.

Sponsorship and NominationTraining Visa Questions
Is Subclass 407 an employment visa?
No. Home Affairs specifically states that the Subclass 407 visa is not intended for ongoing work in Australia. Its purpose is workplace-based occupational training to improve skills, training connected with registration or licensing, certain capacity-building activities or an eligible professional development program. The proposed arrangement therefore needs to represent a genuine training opportunity rather than ordinary employment.
What are the three training types?
Subclass 407 covers occupational training required for registration or licensing, workplace-based training to improve skills in an eligible occupation, and occupational training for capacity building overseas. The capacity-building category can include eligible overseas-qualification, government-supported and professional-development arrangements. Different nomination requirements apply depending on which training type is relevant.
Does my sponsor need approval first?
Yes. Under the current requirements, the prospective sponsor must generally already be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor before a valid Subclass 407 visa application is made. Where a nomination is required, Home Affairs must also approve the nomination before the trainee lodges the visa application. A different process applies where the sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency.
Can I apply while in Australia?
A Subclass 407 application can be made in Australia in eligible circumstances, but restrictions apply to the visa or immigration status the applicant holds at the time. For example, Home Affairs specifies restrictions involving certain Subclass 403 visas, Transit visas and Special Purpose visas. Your individual immigration status should be checked before relying on an onshore application.
How long can the visa last?
The Training Visa is temporary and may be granted for a stay of up to two years. The actual period granted depends on the particular application and approved training arrangement. Time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa, although the holder can generally travel to and from Australia while it remains valid.
Do I need English for Subclass 407?
The primary applicant must have functional English. Home Affairs accepts different forms of evidence, including certain passports, qualifying English-medium education and approved English-language test results that meet the applicable requirements. The accepted tests and scoring framework can change, so current requirements should be checked when preparing the application.
Can my family come with me?
Eligible family members can be included in a Subclass 407 application, and family members who did not apply at the same time may potentially apply later as subsequent entrants. Applicants also need to demonstrate adequate financial support and health insurance for accompanying family members where required.
Can family members be included?
Members of the applicant’s family unit may be included where the relevant requirements are met. Family members applying with the primary applicant are also subject to applicable requirements, including health and character requirements. The position can vary according to the family member’s circumstances, age and dependency.
Can family members work in Australia?
Family members granted a Subclass 407 visa as secondary applicants currently have restricted work rights. Home Affairs states that these family members can work up to 40 hours in a fortnight in Australia. Visa holders should check their individual visa conditions through VEVO.
Can I change my sponsor?
A trainee can potentially move to another organisation, but the new organisation must become the sponsor and submit a new nomination. If the approved training program itself changes, further nomination and visa requirements can arise. A visa holder should not simply begin a different training arrangement without checking what needs to occur first.
Can Visa Route Migration find me a sponsor?
No. Visa Route Migration does not provide sponsor-finding, employment-placement or training-placement services for Subclass 407 applicants. You should already have a suitable sponsoring organisation and proposed training arrangement. Once that arrangement exists, assistance can be provided with the relevant migration, sponsorship, nomination, training-plan and visa requirements.
Can I extend a Subclass 407 visa?
The existing Training Visa itself cannot simply be extended. If further time in Australia is required, another visa application would need to be considered. A person seeking another Subclass 407 visa would need continuing sponsorship and may need to explain why the approved training could not be completed during the original training period.
What other applicant requirements apply?
Depending on the circumstances, relevant requirements can include being usually at least 18, having functional English, genuinely intending to stay temporarily for the approved purpose, maintaining adequate health insurance, having sufficient financial support and meeting applicable health, character and other visa criteria. Eligibility needs to be considered against the individual application rather than assumed from the training arrangement alone.

[email protected]Discuss Your Training Arrangement
If you already have a suitable sponsoring organisation and proposed occupational training arrangement, Visa Route Migration can discuss the Subclass 407 requirements that may apply to both the trainee and sponsor. Assistance may involve sponsorship, nomination, the training plan, supporting documentation and the visa application depending on your circumstances and agreed professional scope. Book a Consultation to discuss the arrangement and determine an appropriate next step.
Training Required for Registration or Licensing
One Subclass 407 pathway is available for occupational training that is necessary for a person to obtain registration, professional membership or licensing connected with their occupation. The registration or licensing must be required for the person to work in that occupation in Australia or in their home country. The training itself must be workplace based, and the nominee needs appropriate qualifications and experience to undertake it.
The proposed duration also needs to relate to what is actually required to obtain the relevant registration, membership or licence, taking the trainee’s previous experience into account. This makes the purpose of the training particularly important: it is not enough simply to undertake additional workplace experience if the arrangement does not meet the requirements of this training type.
Where appropriate, Visa Route Migration can assist the applicant and sponsoring organisation in understanding the relevant Subclass 407 requirements, preparing the training plan and supporting evidence, and addressing the sponsorship, nomination and visa stages associated with the proposed arrangement.
Workplace Training to Improve Occupational Skills
The skills-enhancement training type is intended for structured workplace training designed around the particular nominee’s development needs. Current regulations require the program to be specifically tailored to those needs and to have a duration that reflects the training required. The training must also relate to an occupation specified for this Subclass 407 purpose.
A significant experience requirement applies to this training type. The nominee must generally have the equivalent of at least 12 months of full-time experience in the relevant occupation during the 24 months immediately before the nomination. That requirement makes a person’s recent occupational background an important issue to check before preparing the nomination.
Visa Route Migration can assist where the eligibility requirements are met, including consideration of the proposed training type, preparation of the training plan and supporting documentation, nomination assistance and the subsequent visa application.
Training for Capacity Building Overseas
The third broad Subclass 407 training type covers eligible occupational training intended to support capacity building overseas. It contains different possible arrangements rather than one single set of circumstances, including overseas-qualification training, government-supported training and professional-development programs.
For the overseas-qualification category, the nominee must require a period of practical experience, research or observation to obtain a qualification from a foreign educational institution. Current regulations limit this particular practical period to no more than six months and require a structured workplace-based program tailored to the nominee.
Government-supported training must have the required government support and involve structured workplace training tailored to the nominee’s needs. Professional-development arrangements have separate requirements, including an overseas employer, a managerial or professional position and training relevant to developing those professional or managerial skills. The primary form of professional-development training is required to be face-to-face teaching in a classroom or similar setting.
Visa Route Migration can assist with each of these recognised capacity-building pathways where the relevant eligibility criteria are met.
Temporary Activities Sponsor Application
A suitable sponsoring organisation is central to most Subclass 407 matters. Home Affairs generally requires the organisation to be approved as a Temporary Activities Sponsor before the trainee can make a valid visa application. The current sequence is therefore different from older information online that may suggest sponsorship, nomination and the visa application can all be lodged concurrently.
Visa Route Migration can assist a sponsoring organisation with the Temporary Activities Sponsor application where appropriate. This may include guidance about the relevant sponsorship requirements, preparation of the application and supporting documentation, and communication with Home Affairs within the agreed professional scope.
This assistance does not mean Visa Route Migration finds sponsoring organisations for prospective trainees. The client must already have a suitable organisation and proposed training arrangement before the practice becomes involved in the migration process.
Subclass 407 Nomination Assistance
For most sponsors, approval as a Temporary Activities Sponsor is followed by a separate nomination for the proposed occupational training program. The nomination identifies the intended trainee and provides Home Affairs with information about the purpose of the training and how and where it will take place. A Commonwealth Government agency follows different nomination arrangements.
The selected training type matters at this stage because each of the three recognised categories has its own nomination criteria. The proposed program must represent a genuine training opportunity and meet the requirements relevant to the nominee and training purpose.
Under the current application rules, where a nomination is required it must be approved and remain current before the Subclass 407 visa application is made. Visa Route Migration can assist with preparing the nomination and supporting information and communicating with Home Affairs throughout the relevant process.
Preparing a Suitable Training Plan
A Subclass 407 training arrangement needs more than a job description. For relevant training types, the legislation requires structured training that is specifically tailored to the nominee’s development needs. The duration and content of the program should therefore make sense in light of the trainee’s existing skills, experience and the particular objective of the proposed training.
Visa Route Migration can assist with preparation of the training plan and supporting documentation where applicable. The purpose is to clearly present the proposed training arrangement and how it relates to the relevant Subclass 407 requirements, rather than treating ordinary productive work as though it were automatically an occupational training program.
The organisation remains responsible for having a genuine proposed training arrangement and for providing accurate information about what training will actually occur. The applicant must likewise provide complete and truthful information concerning their qualifications, experience and circumstances. The wider Visa Route Migration service model expects clients to provide accurate information and requested documents and to promptly advise of relevant changes.
Preparing the Training Visa Application
Once the required sponsorship and nomination arrangements are in place, the trainee can move to the Subclass 407 visa application stage. Home Affairs currently requires the application to be lodged online and asks for evidence relating to matters such as identity, sponsorship or nomination, financial support, health insurance and the applicant’s English ability. Qualifications, a curriculum vitae and relevant registration or licensing documents may also be needed depending on the training arrangement.
The applicant must genuinely intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the approved training purpose and comply with the conditions attached to the visa. The visa is not an unrestricted work visa: the primary holder’s work must remain connected with the approved course of study or training, and the person must continue to participate in the nominated program.
Visa Route Migration can assist with preparing the visa application and supporting documentation and, where appropriate, communicating with the Department of Home Affairs during the assessment process. Assistance may also be provided if further information is requested, subject to the circumstances and agreed professional engagement. The practice’s wider confirmed service model allows both limited-scope and broader application assistance depending on the client’s needs.
